I enjoy the art from Katsushika Hokusai. To me, his work resembles a graphic design style. He produced illustrations and color prints that drew their inspiration from the traditions, legends, and lives of the Japanese people. Impressionism was strongly influenced by Japanese prints after several of Hokusai’s pieces were used as packing material for a box of China sent to Felix Bracquemond in 1856.

Looking further into the art of Friedrich, Casper David I became fascinated with his landscapes. The composition of Monk by the sea breaks from what "normal" perspective paintings were supposed to be, you can see this in the tiny figure of a man set against a natural landscape with the sky divided into three different colors. And, since all of the lines are headed in a direction out of the frame it gives it a sense of infinity. this painting is mesmerizing to me. It gives me the sensation of the space that he is in and what he is feeling with his surroundings.

I enjoy the works of Francisco Goya. I found it interesting that he was a rococo style painter before transitioning to a Romantic style. He lived to be 82 and his work extended for a period of over 60 years. His work was motivated by his feelings of the world that he thought was perfect as a kid and than slowly watched his perception of the world deteriorate as he grew older. His work shocked and amazed and you knew there was a working brain in that mans head. I enjoy his dark subject matter and how he could capture a wrong doing in his paintings like The Third of May. I also enjoy a painting he did of a plucked turkey because it shows simple subject matter but its somewhat morbid.
The piece that really took hole of my eye was “The Heart of the Andes” by Frederic Edwin Church. The sheer beauty of this piece is just amazing. I love how the artist put all the little details in the foliage and mountains. This image almost looks exactly as if were just a photograph. I did find it surprising that the piece was exhibited alone by itself, but by looking at the finesse detail and colors I can imagine paying for a ticket to see it. I like that he put in two figures towards the bottom of the painting. It really breaks an all environment scene and gives it that much more life in it. I find this painting very exciting and full of life.

I enjoyed all of Frederic Edwin Church's pieces, but one that stood out to me was defiantly "Our Banner in the Sky." I feel as though, the thought put into it was genuine and very creative. It was said that Frederic was always concerened with showing spiritual dimension in his work, which becomes obvious when looking at this piece. He would travel throughout the seasons in NY, sketching scenes that moved him. He would paint them after he returned to his home. How realistic these paintings really look, is amazing. The colors of the skies, and the ambience of the forests makes you feel as though you are right there in the painting. I really enjoy looking at his work, it is 100% inspiring.
I enjoy the work of 19th century artist Mary Cassat. She came from a wealthy family, and probably would never have had to work a day in her life. Yet she wanted to become an artist. Women artist were not common in her time and when women took art classes it was just a way for them to become more well rounded. But Mary Cassat took it to the next level, all that she learned from her art classes she took and tried to better her own art in hopes to someday become a well known artist. Cassats view on women surely stood out in her art work. She felt they where just as important and as talented as men. Therefor most of her paintings have women figures in them. She also painted the relationship between a mother and a chile quite often. Most of her early work was impressionism which I liked. But my favorite piece by her is "The Bath". I like the washed out colors used in the painting and the view it has like she is peeking in from a higher point on the mother washing the child's feet. More than likely this was one of her maids washing one of her younger siblings or nieces feet. Mary Cassat is an interesting woman and I can go on and on about her lifestyle and the style of her paintings, but overall she accomplished her goal and made her mark in the art world.

Monticello, Charlottesville, Virginia, built between 1770-1806.
The private residence of Thomas Jefferson, also known as Monticello, was built during the Neoclassical time period in the United States. Jefferson drew the architectural designs for his own house, making it to be constructed of brick and wood with a dome in a polygonal shape. Here we can see Jefferson's reference to the classical Greek principles of architecture.
The government of The United States of America is organized as a Republic, which is a in other words a Democracy. However, this idea of Democracy was first introduced by the Greeks in Athens in their classical period. We could say then, that Jefferson's architectural design are linked to his understanding of Greece being the pioneers in a Democratic Country and also the pioneers in greatly designed architecture.

I really loved the piece Nocturne in Black and Gold: The Falling Rocket by James McNeill Whistler. Other works by Whistler also caught my attention when researching him. Several of the pieces seemed sober and full of story as many of them have people as the many focus. The colors are saturated and they feel as though they could be contemporary pieces. What struck me most about Falling Rocket as he seems to have captured a moment in time, with the smoke obscuring some the light from the rocket it triggers a smell of magnesium from my own memory of fireworks. I think this would have been shocking to most as it doesn't have a clear image but a more realistic approach to how real fireworks look. It could have been seen as unfocused and as I found through research people questioned if this could be called "artwork". This piece triggered Whistler is sue one of the critics for libel. The critic said he was outraged that the artist was asking for so much money for this piece when he viewed as simply throwing paint in peoples' faces. Whistler fought to argue the point "art for art's sake" and he was not trying to paint a picture or impart information but rather just to see it was interesting.

http://www.oksanas.net/art.htm , This address is where the 2nd homework assignment is regarding the post of the idol artwork listed in detail below....
This piece above is my 2nd homework assignment and is from 2nd millenium BC. I'm not sure if the name is IDOL or ELK HORN, but it was found when perusing through ancient grounds of eastern Russia and it portrays a nude man with somewhat distinct features like the portruding lips and the, what appears to be, closed eyes. You will also notice that he's missing a leg, but this may have been missing during excavation. Also notice the polished glaze of the piece, which shows careful attention to detail and time in creating it. In my opinion, it reflects love...he is in love with someone and appears smitten - I'm new at this, so forgive me if this is incorrect. Henry
The work of art that I selected was "La Grande Odalisque", which means "harem woman", I enjoy the appreciation for the form of the woman and how sensuous but discreet she looks. The artist favored long, sinuous lines, that he created in this painting using the woman's back. This type of painting was ridiculed at first but became accepted and was exhibited in 1819, I believe that exhibition has opened doors since that time for nude painting.

For this posting I looked over 18th and 19th Century Art and came across the Parnassus by Guiseppe Bernardino Bison and found it very eye catching. The use of color for that period of time I felt was pretty good. I like the way that the color fades from dark to light to show provide the intense glow around the main figure in the scene. I have no choice but to like this picture because I am big on detail and the is a lot of it in this picture from the dresses all the way back to the landscape in the background.

i when i look at nocturne in black and gold i feel like im in a modern city underground and youre looking at the city from across a lake and the fireworks look like sparksf as if someone was welding something. so its iteresting what you can get from a picture. i had no idea that it was an actual scene of fireworks exploding over London’s Cremorne Gardens at night. wich i thought was werd because that doesnt look anything like what it was meant to be but i like my version better.
