Choose two works from either your text book or from topics covered in class to write an essay. Research well... you must use a minimum of two sources outside of the text. Compare and Contrast the two works discussing similarities and differences. Be sure to include a detailed description of each work, background information like when and where it was made. What was the political and religious context? How did the climate and geography influence the work?

In addition to The Gates project in New York City, Central Park by Cristo and Jeanne-Claude, we consider different approaches to the landscape--works by a nineteenth-century American, a fourteenth-century Chinese, an aboriginal Australian, and a twentieth-century American--in order to see how different artists from very different times and places, have responded to the same fundamental phenomenon up to the present time, and the world that surrounds them.

Reflection: Rather than emphasizing differences, please write one paragraph listing some of the similarities that you observe in these very different approaches.

Reviewing Realism and Impressionism

In Courbet's Studio of a Painter: A Real Allegory Summarizing My Seven Years as an Artist, it is the artist Courbet, of course, who plays the central role in the monumental painting. During the Paris Exhibition of 1855, Courbet brought attention to this painting in a private exhibition in a large shed and by distributing a "manifesto of Realism". Use search engine to research this manifesto and other artist manifestos.

Next, write a paragraph description of a "real" allegory of an art student in which you play the central role. For extra credit, you may produce a work of art to accompany.

The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters

Please read Chapter 21 on Neoclassicism and Romanticism...

Francisco Goya created terrifying scenes such as The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters from the series Los Caprichos of the late 1790s. The subtitle, expanded later, expands the meaning of the image without entirely explaining it. "Imagination abandoned by reason produces impossible monsters; united with her, she is the mother of all of the arts." According to author (Janson), although the works in the series are suggested by proverbs and popular superstitions, many of Goya's prints defy exact analysis.

Research Goya's Los Caprichos for inspiration.. use search engine. Next, I would like you to invent an "impossible monster" based on a proverb or popular superstition (you can use something from current popular culture if you would like). Write at least one very descriptive paragraph about "impossible monster".. feel free to invoke the five senses. If you would like, you may produce a two dimensional image and publish with entry for extra credit.
